As the 2024-2025 academic year came to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect, and celebrate all the moments, that shaped this year. From meaningful hikes to identity-deepening writing projects, and from nervous first speeches to confident leadership in the field, our students showed up with heart, grit, and curiosity to learn more about themselves.

This year, 213 students from the Central Valley and Tahoe/Truckee regions participated in our Academic Year Programs. Throughout the school year, students engaged deeply with ARC’s curriculum, reflecting on their lived experiences, writing and editing bio poems, and sharing them with their peers. These moments of self discovery and storytelling not only helped students better understand themselves, but also built empathy and connection within their cohorts. As always, we asked students to reflect on how ARC impacted them. Through our end-of-year surveys, students shared increases in their writing skills, confidence in public speaking, leadership abilities, and motivation for future goals.

Community Leadership (CL) Program
This year’s CL students continued to show what’s possible when youth are trusted as leaders. The CL Program offers flexibility for students to build their skills and complete requirements between their Immersive ARC Summer Course and high school graduation. This academic year, CLs planned and led hikes, received training in Wilderness First Aid and CPR, and planned and facilitated half-day experiences with middle school students. We’re happy to share that 8 CL students graduated from high school this year and were awarded ARC scholarships, totaling $8,000!

We are so grateful for our supportive community! You helped 213 students spend 5,691 hours with ARC, growing, learning, and stepping into their potential. These numbers represent so much more than data; they reflect the heart, commitment, and resilience of our youth and the village that surrounds them.

Summer Program Orientation
This month, we held two orientation backpacking weekends for prospective summer students in each region. They were filled with laughter, learning, and a contagious sense of joy as our incoming students took their first steps into the ARC journey. In the Central Valley, students hiked through the wild beauty of Henry Coe State Park, bonding over burritos, games of Bears, Cowboys & Ninjas (with every round ending in a tie!), and the surprise visit of wild turkeys, one of which woke Miguel in the middle of the night and confirmed what he’d already felt: “This is where I’m meant to be.” Meanwhile, in Tahoe/Truckee, students from 5 different high schools were guided with confidence and heart by summer alumnus and current Community Leader, Carlos Ruiz. His presence set the tone, and the group stepped up with open minds and a shared spirit of adventure, learning essential wilderness skills, and diving deep into journaling and reflection. Watching these students laugh, learn, and lead reminded us exactly why we do this work.

Thank you for your continued support! We’re so proud of all our students’ accomplishments and of our incredible staff and partners who supported them every step of the way.
Happy Trails,
ARC Team
